BMX Riding: The Thrill… And The Risks

Whether you’re hitting the dirt trails, the streets, or the skatepark, BMX riding is all about pushing limits. But with big tricks and bigger falls come real risks — and injuries are, unfortunately, part of the game.

Here’s a look at the most common injuries BMX riders face (and how to stay safe while sending it):

1. Fractures & Broken Bones

Wrist, collarbone, ankle, and forearm fractures are high on the list. Falls at high speed or awkward landings are common culprits. A good helmet isn’t enough — pads and wrist guards can make a huge difference.

2. Concussions & Head Trauma

Even with helmets, head injuries can happen — especially from high-impact falls or slams. Know the signs: confusion, dizziness, nausea. Don’t brush it off — rest and medical attention are key.

3. Dislocations (Shoulder, Knee, Fingers)

One bad fall can pop a joint out of place — and once it’s happened, it’s easier for it to happen again. Strength training and proper warm-ups help reduce the risk.

4. Soft Tissue Injuries

Torn ligaments (especially ACLs), sprained ankles, and muscle strains can sideline even the toughest riders. Sometimes it's the small missteps — not the big tricks — that do the damage.

BMX is more than a sport — it’s a lifestyle. But even legends crash. Ride hard, but ride smart.
