As horse riders, we often put so much effort into our horses and their wellbeing, that we quickly seem to forget to look after ourselves!

As the competition season slowly approaches again, this is a great time to get on top of any acute or ongoing niggles/injuries you may have from winter training.

The physiotherapists at BPC can help with many different aspects that are crucial to the equestrian athlete. This includes postural assessments to help improve position, treatment for any acute injuries such as sprains, strains or contusions (hopefully not all caused by the furry friend in the paddock!), repetitive injuries such as lower back pain from mucking out those stables, or simply helping improve strength, endurance and awareness on your horse. At BPC you can also attend physio-led Pilates which has been proven to be one of the best forms of movement a rider can do off their horse to help enhance their performance.

Remember, being a rider requires more than just skill on the saddle—it’s a full-body sport that demands balance, coordination, and core control, and this again varies from one discipline to another. Addressing your own biomechanics and physical conditioning will not only improve your effectiveness as a rider but also contribute to your horse’s comfort and performance. When a rider is strong, symmetrical, and balanced in the saddle, it allows the horse to move more freely and correctly underneath them. Poor rider posture or weaknesses through places such as the core, glutes, lower legs, back or upper limbs can create asymmetry whilst in the saddle, causing the horse to compensate and potentially develop soreness, stiffness, or even long-term lameness. By becoming a more stable and independent rider, you reduce the burden on your horse’s body and give them the best chance to perform at their peak and be as comfortable as possible. It’s not just about looking polished in the ring—it's about being a true partner to your horse in every sense.

Whether you're a casual rider or training at a high level, looking after your own body should be just as much a priority as caring for your equine partner.
